Monterey Cypress Ecosystem

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve's marine environment is safeguarded by two distinct marine protected areas: the Point Lobos State Marine Reserve (SMR) and the Point Lobos State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA). The SMR, spanning 5.36 square miles, strictly prohibits any fishing or removal of marine life, ensuring complete protection within its boundaries. Complementing this, the SMCA covers a larger area of 8.83 square miles. While the SMCA also restricts the harvest of living marine resources, it allows for recreational and commercial salmon fishing, commercial albacore fishing, and commercial spot prawn take.

Originally established as the Point Lobos Ecological Reserve in 1973, the area was expanded and renamed in 2007 to enhance its protective status. These marine protected areas serve as vital havens for a diverse array of marine life, ranging from those dependent on near-shore kelp forests to inhabitants of the deep Carmel Submarine Canyon. A no-take zone extends from Monastery Beach to MalPaso Creek's mouth, further bolstering conservation efforts. These efforts align with California's Marine Life Protection Act Initiative, contributing to a statewide network of marine protected areas. Carmel Bay State Marine Conservation Area, nestled between Pescadero Point and Point Lobos, adds another layer of protection, covering over two square miles of nearshore waters with rocky reefs, kelp forests, and sandy seafloor habitats. Recreational finfish take and certain kelp harvesting are allowed in Carmel Bay SMCA, but take of other living marine resources is prohibited.

Marine Protected Areas

The Whalers Cabin, nestled in Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, stands as a testament to the area's multifaceted history. Constructed in the 1850s, the cabin initially sheltered Chinese and later Japanese fishermen, utilizing locally sourced pine and redwood. Its original dirt floor was supported by whale vertebrae resting on granite blocks. Around Whaler's Cove, approximately ten similar cabins once stood. The Carmel Whaling Company operated from 1862 to 1879, contributing to the sixteen shore whaling stations in California that involved around 300 men.

After the last resident vacated the cabin in 1983, it was transformed into the Whaling Station Museum. Modern additions were removed, and descendants of cove residents contributed artifacts. Today, it is the only preserved structure of its era, dedicated to the cultural history of Point Lobos, including its cinematic appearances and early 20th-century development plans. The museum highlights the whaling industry that thrived in the region during the mid-to-late 1800s.
