Golden
Temple of the Sun God

Qorikancha, meaning "Golden Place" in Quechua, was the most important temple dedicated to the Inca Sun God Inti. It was adorned with gold, including a large solid golden disc studded with precious stones.

Spanish Conquest

The Spanish conquistadors destroyed Qorikancha, plundering its riches and replacing the Inca temple with the Convent of Santo Domingo. Only a curved outer wall and partial ruins of the inner temple remain.

Sacred Garden

The temple was surrounded by a Sacred Garden, described by Spanish chroniclers as having golden plants with leaves of beaten gold, stems of silver, solid gold corn-cobs, and 20 life-size llamas and their herders all in solid gold.
