Native American Heritage

Red Rock Canyon's dramatic landscape is a product of a complex geological history spanning millions of years. The area was once submerged under an ocean basin during the Paleozoic Era, approximately 600 million years ago, resulting in the deposition of up to 9,000 feet of limey sediments that eventually formed limestone. Around 250 million years ago, during the Mesozoic Era, tectonic shifts caused the Earth's crust to rise, leading to the deposition of marine shales and sandstones. As the basin became isolated, evaporite formations of salt and gypsum were deposited. The red colors characteristic of the rocks are due to the oxidation of iron minerals in the sediments.

About 180 million years ago, the area transformed into a vast desert with expansive sand dunes, which later lithified into the colorful Aztec Sandstone. A significant geological event, the Laramide orogeny, occurred around 66 million years ago, giving rise to the Keystone Thrust Fault. This fault, part of a series of thrust faults across western North America, pushed older gray sedimentary rock over younger red rocks, creating the varicolored landscape visible today. The Keystone Thrust is exposed for 13 miles along the Red Rock escarpment. The Lee Canyon thrust plate contains over 4,000 feet of terrigenous rocks at its base, while the Wheeler Pass thrust may contain at least 11,000 feet of these rocks.
