Inspired by Waka Poetry
The garden's design is heavily influenced by 88 themes from famous waka poems, recreating landscapes described in classical Japanese literature.
Creator's Vision
It was created by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, a trusted retainer of the fifth Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. He personally oversaw its design and construction.
Central Feature
The large central pond, called Senketsu-no-ike, is a prominent feature, with several islets and bridges that create diverse viewing perspectives.
