John Rich, buoyed by the success of The Beggar's Opera, commissioned Edward Shepherd to design the original theatre. This structure was destroyed by fire in 1808 and was succeeded by a second neoclassical theatre designed by Robert Smirke, notable as the first London building with a Doric-style façade.
