Venerating a Saint
The scuola was founded in 1478 by a confraternity of wealthy Venetian citizens to venerate Saint Roch, a saint invoked against the plague, which frequently afflicted Venice. The building itself is a testament to the city's struggles with and faith in overcoming epidemics.
Artistic Competition
Tintoretto secured the commission for the scuola's decoration through a clever, albeit cheeky, move. He submitted a finished painting for a competition when others only submitted sketches, thereby winning the favour of the confraternity and outmaneuvering his rivals, including Paolo Veronese.
