Samurai Graves
Sengaku-ji is most famous as the final resting place for the 47 Rōnin (masterless samurai) who avenged their lord's death in the early 18th century. Their graves are a major pilgrimage site.
Avenged Lord
The 47 Rōnin sought vengeance for their lord, Asano Naganori, who was forced to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) after assaulting Kira Yoshinaka within Edo Castle. Kira's grave is also said to be at Sengaku-ji, though his actual remains are debated.
Epic Tale
The story of the 47 Rōnin, often referred to as 'Chūshingura,' is one of Japan's most celebrated and retold tales, inspiring countless plays, films, and television dramas. Sengaku-ji is the historical heart of this narrative.
Temple Size
Despite its immense historical significance, Sengaku-ji is a relatively small and unassuming temple complex compared to some of Japan's grander Buddhist sites, allowing visitors to experience its somber atmosphere intimately.
