Introduction

Sequoia National Park holds significant historical ties to the Monache, or Western Mono, people, who were among the area's first inhabitants. Their presence dates back centuries, with evidence suggesting settlement as early as AD 1000. The Monache primarily resided in the Kaweah River drainage, within the foothills of what is now the park, and seasonally occupied areas as high as the Giant Forest. As permanent residents, their population was estimated to be around 2,000.

Hospital Rock, within the park, was once the site of a major Monache village, housing nearly 500 people. Visitors can still observe pictographs and bedrock mortars used for grinding acorns, a staple food, offering a glimpse into their traditional life. Potwisha campground is named after a Monache band who frequented the area near Camp Wolverton. The Potwisha band of the Monache Indians left the park area around 1865.

The Monache practiced periodic fire burning to manage the landscape for hunting and agriculture, a technique that influenced the region's ecology. In the summertime, the Monache would travel over the high mountain passes to trade with tribes to the East. The Tulare County Museum displays a significant collection of Native American basketry, showcasing the artistry of the Monache and other regional tribes. The "Native Voices" exhibit at the Three Rivers Museum further explores the tribal communities of the area, highlighting their history and artistry.

Sequoia National Park distinguishes itself through its giant sequoia groves, a defining feature of the park's landscape. Within park boundaries, approximately 40 different giant sequoia groves are distinguished, ranging from single trees to tens of thousands of sequoias per grove. These groves, found on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada between 4,000 and 8,000 feet in elevation, represent a unique ecosystem where giant sequoias, though often fewer in number than other tree species, dominate in size and visual impact.

The Giant Forest, the largest of the unlogged giant sequoia groves, resides within Sequoia National Park. It contains more exceptionally large sequoias than any other grove and hosts the General Sherman Tree, the largest living sequoia by volume. Visitors to the Giant Forest can observe the results of decades of prescribed burning, which has created open forest conditions and fostered the establishment of giant sequoia seedlings. This grove features an extensive network of hiking trails, offering opportunities to explore both the natural and cultural history of the area, including historic structures from the era of cattle grazing.

The General Grant Grove, while located in Kings Canyon National Park, is connected to the Giant Forest by the Generals Highway, facilitating access to another significant population of giant sequoias. Together, these groves contribute to the 202,430 acres of old-growth forests shared by Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, underscoring the importance of this region for the conservation of giant sequoias.

Giant Sequoias

Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States, significantly shapes the landscape of Sequoia National Park. The mountain's western slopes lie within the park's boundaries, marking the culmination of the 211.9-mile John Muir Trail, which begins in Yosemite Valley and ends at Whitney's summit. This trail offers a gradual ascent to the peak, rising approximately 3,000 feet above Guitar Lake.

The summit of Mount Whitney, reaching 14,505 feet, is part of the Great Western Divide, a prominent feature visible from various points within Sequoia National Park, including Mineral King and the Giant Forest. The mountain contributes to the park's diverse geology, being primarily composed of granitic rocks formed during the Cretaceous Period. These rocks, including granite, diorite, and monzonite, create the dramatic mountain and canyon landscape.

Water flowing from Mount Whitney's west side feeds Whitney Creek, which flows into the Kern River. The Kern River carves a deep canyon in the park's backcountry, reaching depths of over 5,000 feet for a span of 30 miles. The mountain's elevation places it above the tree line, fostering an alpine climate and ecology with sparse vegetation, such as the sky pilot plant, and transient animal life, including the Parnassius phoebus butterfly and gray-crowned rosy finch.

Sequoia National Park features over 270 known caves, primarily solutional caves dissolved from marble due to the Sierra Nevada Batholith's formation. These caves are located mainly in the middle and lower elevations, below 7,000 feet, though some, like White Chief cave and Cirque Cave in Mineral King, are found as high as 10,000 feet. These formations are carved by abundant seasonal streams, with many larger caves having sinking streams running through them.

Lilburn Cave stands as California's longest, with nearly 17 miles of surveyed passages. Crystal Cave, discovered in 1918, is the park's second-longest, stretching over 3.4 miles and maintained at a constant 48°F (9°C). Access to Crystal Cave is available exclusively through guided tours, with accommodations like assisted listening devices and American Sign Language tablets provided. Crystal Cave Road has vehicle restrictions: vehicles exceeding 22 feet in cumulative length are prohibited.

Cave discoveries are frequent, with Ursa Minor being a major find in 2006. Boydencavern, accessible through Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, reopened in May 2024 after road repairs. It is operated by a new company since 2019. The park manages caves to protect their fragile formations and cave life, supported by ongoing scientific research.

Park Caves

Mineral King, a subalpine glacial valley now part of Sequoia National Park since 1978, lies at the headwaters of the East Fork of the Kaweah River. Historically, it served as a summer refuge for the Yokuts tribe and later experienced a silver mining boom in the 1870s, leading to the construction of Mineral King Road. This road, essential for accessing the valley, passes through the Redwood Creek Grove and Atwell Grove of giant sequoias, which were included within Sequoia National Park's boundaries in 1890, while Mineral King itself was initially excluded.

The Mineral King area became a recreational center by the 1920s, later seeing private cabins built in communities like Cabin Cove and Silver City. Notably, Mineral King Road Cultural Landscape is now on the National Register of Historic Places. A significant event in Mineral King's history was the proposal for Disney's Mineral King Ski Resort in the 1960s, which faced opposition from preservationists and was ultimately halted when the valley was annexed into Sequoia National Park.

Within Mineral King, creeks fed by snowmelt form waterfalls like Tufa Falls and Crystal Creek Falls. The area also features lakes such as Mosquito Lakes and Eagle Lake. Caves also exist within the park's Mineral King area, such as the White Chief cave and Cirque Cave, carved out of rock by seasonal streams.
