Original Founder
The original Shakespeare and Company bookstore was founded in 1919 by Sylvia Beach, an American expatriate. It was a lending library and bookstore.
Published Here
Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare and Company famously published James Joyce's 'Ulysses' in 1922, after it faced censorship in English-speaking countries.
Second Iteration
The current Shakespeare and Company was opened in 1951 by George Whitman, originally named 'Le Mistral', but later renamed in tribute to Sylvia Beach in 1964 after her death.
Home to Writers
The bookstore has a tradition of hosting writers and artists in exchange for helping out in the shop. These individuals are known as "Tumbleweeds."
