Taipei 101 is known for its spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks display. Before the fireworks launch, the building's lights are turned off, and each of its 8 stacked modules is lit with numbers from 8 to 1, counting down the last 8 seconds of the year.
Lease Expiration
A collection of private companies called Taipei Financial Center Corporation Taipei began planning Taipei 101 in 1997. They have a 70-year lease, so the building will return to the city in 2067.
Eco-Friendly Design
Taipei 101 was designed to be the world's tallest green building, certified by LEED standards in 2011. It features eco-friendly features like energy efficiency and an internal water recycling system.
Construction Completion
Construction of Taipei 101 began in 1999 in the Xinyi district of Taipei and was officially completed on the last day of 2004. The first ever Taipei 101 fireworks display took place at midnight on January 1st, 2005, marking the start of a New Year's Eve tradition.
