Built from European Structures
The museum's architecture is a composite of authentic architectural elements, primarily from five medieval French cloisters (Cuxa, Saint-Guilhem, Bonnefont, Trie, and Froville), which were dismantled and reassembled in Fort Tryon Park.
Philanthropic Beginnings
The land for The Cloisters, as well as a significant portion of its initial collection and the surrounding parkland, was donated by John D. Rockefeller Jr., who was a passionate collector of medieval art.
Home of the Unicorn Tapestries
One of the most famous and beloved attractions at The Cloisters is the series of seven 'Hunt of the Unicorn' tapestries, masterpieces of medieval art depicting a symbolic unicorn hunt.
