Founder of Shingon Buddhism
Tochoji Temple was founded by Kukai (also known as Kobo Daishi), one of Japan's most important religious figures and the founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. It's considered one of the oldest temples established by him.
Fukuoka Daibutsu (Great Buddha)
Tochoji Temple is home to the Fukuoka Daibutsu, a massive wooden statue of Buddha. At 10.8 meters (35 feet) tall and weighing 30 tons, it is the largest seated wooden Buddha statue in Japan.
