The Twelve Apostles are composed of soft limestone, which is susceptible to erosion by the powerful waves of the Southern Ocean.
Remaining Stacks
Despite their name, there are currently only eight limestone stacks remaining. The ninth stack collapsed in July 2005.

These magnificent rock formations were created over millions of years through constant erosion of the mainland cliffs by the wind and ocean.
Original Name
Prior to being known as the Twelve Apostles, the formations were originally called 'Sow and Piglets,' with the largest stack referred to as 'Sow' and the smaller ones as 'Piglets.' They were later renamed to attract tourism.
