Founder's Brother

Wakayama Castle was originally constructed in 1585 by Toyotomi Hidenaga, the younger brother of the powerful samurai warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who ordered its construction.

Ohashi-Roka
Sloping Corridor Bridge

One of the castle's most distinctive features is the Ohashi-Roka, a unique sloping corridor bridge that connects the Ninomaru (second bailey) to the Nishinomaru (west bailey) over a moat. It was designed to allow lords to cross without being seen.

WWII
Post-War Reconstruction

The original castle keep was destroyed by American air raids during World War II in 1945. The current main keep (tenshu) is a faithful concrete reconstruction completed in 1958.
