Multiple Winter Palaces
The current Winter Palace is actually the fifth one built in St. Petersburg. The first two were built by Peter the Great, and the others were constructed by subsequent rulers.
Last Years
Peter the Great spent the last years of his life in the second Winter Palace, which was made of stone. It was also where he died.
Abdication and Revolution
In 1917, Tsar Nicholas II abdicated, marking the end of the Romanov dynasty. The Winter Palace became the seat of the Provisional Government, but the Romanov family never lived there again.
