◾︎Uji: 1,700 Years of the Rabbit’s Legend◾︎ 1. The Enduring Bond of Two Brothers — 1,700 Years Ago Long ago in Uji, there lived a young prince named Uji no Wakairatsuko. Gifted and highly educated, he was expected by his father, Emperor Ōjin, to succeed to the throne. Yet he deeply respected his elder brother, later known as Emperor Nintoku. After their father’s death, both brothers refused the throne, each insisting that the other should take it. For three years, the position remained vacant. In the end, the prince gave his life so that his brother could ascend to the throne. This story of brotherly devotion is still remembered in Uji. His spirit is enshrined at Ujigami Shrine, while Uji Shrine stands on the site where he once lived. Together, they preserve the memory of this bond. _____ 2. The “Looking-Back Rabbit” Another legend associated with these shrines concerns a rabbit. The rabbit featured in this reel is called “Mikaeri Usagi”—“mikaeri” means “looking back.” When the prince first arrived in Uji, he is said to have lost his way. A rabbit appeared and moved ahead, pausing and looking back repeatedly, as if guiding him. Since then, the rabbit has been regarded as a divine messenger. At both shrines, it is believed to guide people who find themselves uncertain of their path. Finding the small rabbit figures placed around the grounds has become a quiet way for visitors to reflect on their own direction. _____ 3. A Shrine That Has Endured for Centuries Ujigami Shrine is known for its age and continuity. Its main hall, built in the mid-11th century, is the oldest surviving shrine building in Japan and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. While many structures in Kyoto have been lost to fire or conflict, this shrine has remained largely unchanged for nearly a thousand years. Across the river, Byōdō-in represents the Pure Land, or paradise. In contrast, these shrines have continued to stand in place, connected to everyday life while carrying a long historical presence. _____ _____ #kyoto #japaneseculture #ujishrine #ujigamishrine #uji
