Today is 광복절, Korea National Liberation Day. The name is more specific than it looks. 광복 is 光復, the restoration of light. On this day in 1945 Japan surrendered, and 35 years of colonial rule ended. Then exactly three years later, on 15 August 1948, the Republic of Korea was founded. The same date carries both. It became a national holiday by law in 1949. 81 years today. Walk around Seoul and you’ll see the taegeukgi hanging off apartment balconies all over the city. Worth stopping for. 🇰🇷
