◾︎A question without an answer At Taizo-in( @taizo_in ), a sub-temple of Myoshin-ji in Kyoto, there is a national treasure called “Hyonen-zu”—a painting of a man trying to catch a catfish with a gourd. What’s displayed on the grounds is a replica; the original is entrusted to the Kyoto National Museum. In the early 1400s, Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimochi gave this impossible task to the painter-monk Josetsu, then asked 31 of the era’s finest Zen monks to respond with their own verses. None of them offered a solution. Each one played with the question instead—turning an unsolvable riddle into wit, poetry, and quiet dialogue. This is what Zen calls a koan: not a puzzle to be answered, but a question to be lived with. Looking at the painting, imagining the exchange between those monks centuries ago, I found myself thinking—maybe we’ve been demanding answers for everything, far too often. 📍Taizo-in, Myoshin-ji, Kyoto #zenbuddhism #japaneseaesthetics #kyototemple #quietluxury
