It is a radical legislative rewrite designed to hand the keys of our conservation estate over to private industry. While the Government has announced they will remove the provisions to open up roughly 60% of our public conservation land for sale, THIS. HAS. NOT. HAPPENED. YET. Don’t take them at their word, we need to keep the pressure on. THE WORST PART STILL REMAINS IN THE BILL: After official consultations closed, Cabinet ordered a rewrite of Section 6 of the Conservation Act. They are fundamentally altering DOC’s DNA. Instead of prioritising preservation, the law will now legally mandate DOC to “recognise economic opportunities” and enable commercial exploitation to the “greatest extent practicable.” THIS INCLUDES INSIDE OF NATIONAL PARKS! This is the largest rollback of environmental protections New Zealand has seen in nearly 40 years. They are commercialising our national identity to make a quick buck, and they thought we’d be too distracted to notice.
