getlostwithliam — Mount Taranaki

How many stairs is too many for a view like this? 🏔️ Share this post with someone who isn't afraid of heights ✨ Climbing Paritutu Rock is a Taranaki rite of passage, but don’t let the short distance fool you. It’s a steep, heart-pumping scramble to the summit that requires both hands on the cables and a bit of grit. Once you reach the top, the 360-degree views over the Sugar Loaf Islands and the coastline are absolutely unmatched. 🌋 It’s a vertical 154m (505ft) climb. While it only takes about 15–20 minutes to reach the peak, it is incredibly steep and involves a chain-assisted rock scramble near the top. ☁️ Aim for a clear day to get the full impact of the landscape. It can be extremely windy at the summit, so check the forecast before you start. Beyond the view, the landscape here carries immense mana. In a landmark recognition of its sacred status, Taranaki Maunga (and the surrounding peaks) was granted legal personhood. This means the mountain is legally recognized as a living ancestor and a person in its own right, ensuring its protection and honoring the deep spiritual connection of the local iwi.
