This metal plate has a pretty unusual story behind it. It was sent to me by MemorySteel, a Ukrainian company that turns metal recovered from destroyed Russian military equipment into bracelets, keychains, plaques and other small keepsakes. The company started in Kyiv in 2022, and one of the phrases behind the project sums up the idea perfectly: “Made in Russia. Recycled in Ukraine.” The pieces I received are connected to the Battle for Kyiv, including a metal plaque and bracelet made from recycled military steel. MemorySteel also says part of the proceeds from its products has been used to support projects in Ukraine, including protective equipment and assistance for communities affected by the war.
