This isn’t your typical California road trip. ~ Part 1 of 4 ~ Instead of visiting major icons like Yosemite, or driving the coast, we’re going off the beaten path to some of the lesser-known parts of the state. Our first leg of our adventure focused on the high desert along the Sierra Nevadas—a beautiful area with lots of great hiking, fishing, rock climbing, and other outdoorsy activities. THE ROUTE: PART 1 START: Lake Tahoe END: Alambama Hills / Lone Pine ROUTE: Highway 395 MILES: 270 (+/- some detours) HOURS: ~5.5 hours of driving STOPS ✨ Lake Tahoe - we started in North Lake, which takes you past the whole lake, including popular spots like Emerald Bay, then into South Lake Tahoe. We drove at night and skipped most of this, though. ✨ June Lake - small, pretty lake with campsites ✨ Bodi - bit of a detour to this old ghost town ✨ Mono Lake - go see the weird Tufas ✨ Mammoth - popular ski mountain with mountain biking in the summer ✨ Bishop - cute, small mountain town, popular among rock climbers ✨ Alabama Hills - Hollywood filming location and beautiful desert area to explore. MODIFY THIS ROUTE If you’re flying in from elsewhere, you could start this itinerary in Reno, Nevada. Also easy enough to continue on to Palm Springs, Mojave, Joshua Tree, or Death Valley from here. But (if you stay tuned for part 2!), that’s not quite what we did... 👉 Follow @wheresjessieb to see where we go next, plus more unique travel ideas in California. Have you done this drive?
